LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - More female coaches are needed on the WTA and ATP Tours says Spain's former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who on Thursday was named as tournament director for this year's Billie Jean Cup in Seville. Martinez, who beat Martina Navratilova in the 1994 Wimbledon final, has bucked the trend since retiring. She was part of compatriot Garbine Muguruza's coaching team when the Spaniard won the 2017 Wimbledon title, worked as coach to Czech Karolina Pliskova and even captained Spain's Davis Cup team from 2015 to 2017. Martinez is the exception to the rule, although another former Wimbledon champion Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo did have a stint as coach to three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray. I'd be very happy to see more women coaches on the women's side and why not on the men's side."

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - World number two Aryna Sabalenka roared into the Wimbledon semi-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over American Madison Keys on Wednesday. Sabalenka served out the set after 38 minutes, looking the favourite to reach her second semi-final at the All England Club having done so on her last appearance in 2021. However, Keys, chasing her first Wimbledon semi-final, came out in the second set with more grit and determination. The 25th seed had three break points in the next game and took the third when Sabalenka sent a forehand wide. It was a really tough match, really great player and super happy I was able to win the second set, (and the) game," Sabalenka said on court.

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - It was billed as the battle of the 20-year-olds but Carlos Alcaraz pulled rank on his childhood buddy Holger Rune as he doused the Dane's fireworks to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time with a 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 victory on Wednesday. The two tyros who were born six days apart were contesting a men's Wimbledon quarter-final that for the first time in the professional era featured two players aged under 21. After Alcaraz missed out on converting his first three match points, including producing a double fault on one of them, he sealed a semi-final showdown with Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev when Rune slapped a service return long. After sharing a warm embrace at the net, the Spaniard leaned back and let out a might roar into the skies - showing just how much this win meant to him.
